5 benefits to niching down
How many times have you heard that you have to niche down? Or maybe that “If you’re talking to everyone, you’re talking to no one.”
I get that it can be stressful to think about excluding any potential client when you’re just starting out because, well, you want clients and limiting yourself doesn’t necessarily feel like the best way to bring them in, right?
I know it’s counterintuitive, but the benefits of niching down are huge.
The question is, do you have to niche down, or only focus on one small segment of the market in order for your business to work?
No, you don’t HAVE to choose a niche. It’s your business and you get to choose to do what you want, but being specific about who you’re targeting and how you can help them will certainly make connecting with your dream clients a whole lot easier.
And here are 5 other ways niching down will benefit you.
1. Stand out from your competition
Let’s say you’re a weight loss coach. If your audience is simply “anyone trying to lose weight,” then you’ll find yourself competing with all weight loss coaches.
On the other hand, if your audience is more specific, or niche, like “mom’s trying to lose weight after having a baby,” you’ll be much more likely to stand out to that group of people.
Think about it, wouldn’t you rather hire someone who specializes in solving the exact problem you are having for people just like you? Of course, you would.
Not only that but the more specific you get about what you do and who you help, you’ll shrink the number of people you’re competing with tremendously.
2. Become known for what you do
When you niche down you’ll have more time to get even better at what you do and will become an industry leader.
Why? Because you’ll spend less time researching and trying to excel at all the other things you used to do.
Instead, you’ll get better and better at serving your niche. You’ll get to know your dream clients better and you’ll understand their problem more deeply which will allow you to connect with them more easily.
And because you’ll be a specialist and an expert in your niche, you’ll be referred more often. You’ll be top of mind when it comes to doing what you specifically do.
3. Get more visibility
The more niche you are, the more visibility you can get online. This is because you’ll be able to choose more specific keywords to go after in search engine results.
Let’s say for example you’re a bookkeeper for any type of medical practice. You’ll be up against all other medical practice bookkeepers in the search results. But if you specialize in bookkeeping for chiropractors, the competition will be much smaller.
So, the more specific you get the better chance you’ll have of appearing on Google’s first page of search results which ultimately will lead to more traffic to your website.
4. Be happier
Sure, you could choose a niche purely based on the profit it will bring in, but if you’re not passionate about the work you do, you’ll ultimately be unfulfilled and less likely to succeed.
However, when you choose a specific service and group of people you love to work with, you get to say yes to doing more of the work you enjoy.
And as they say, “If you’re not having fun, you’re doing something wrong.”
5. Grow more quickly
When you have a niche, your marketing can be super focused and speak directly to your dream clients. Because of this, your message will be clear, concise, and consistent allowing you to be confident when you show up. And when you’re confident and show up consistently, you’ll get more sales.
